faq

short answers about memoe, the iPhone app that finds the photos you describe.

what is memoe?

an iPhone app. describe what you remember, like “sunset by the sea in Japan” or “photos with mom”, and it finds the photos and videos in your Apple Photos library. then put them in an album, share them, or use clean up to sort the rest. memoe also makes albums for you, from your trips and events.

is memoe free?

yes, to start. the free plan indexes the newest 1,000 photos on your phone, and the videos taken since, people included, with 500 cloud checks a month. memoe pro covers your whole library, every video too, for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan. more on the pricing page.

which iPhones does it work on?

any iPhone with iOS 17 or later. memoe needs full access to your Photos library, and an internet connection for signing in and for searches. on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence you can search without one: memoe reads your sentence on the phone, with the model Apple builds in.

does it upload my photos?

no. your originals never leave your phone, and memoe looks at them on the phone first. videos stay there too: memoe reads them on the phone and never sends a video, or a frame of one, anywhere. the same goes for photos in an iCloud shared album you are in. if you tap allow cloud checks, memoe can also send a small 512 px preview of some photos through its server to OpenAI, so a model can say what’s in them. memoe’s server doesn’t keep it. tap not now and no previews are sent.

what can i search for?

people (by name, once you’ve named them), clothes and colors, objects, scenes, selfies, text in photos, places, dates and favorites, in any combination. ask for “photos of mom” and you get photos, ask for “videos from Japan” and you get videos, and if you name neither you get both. some requests are more of a feeling than a filter. memoe does its best and shows you what it found, so you can judge for yourself. anything it can’t search for is marked can’t search, so you know it wasn’t applied.

can i search in another language?

yes. type what you remember in the language you use, or mix a few, like “fotos de mi perro en la playa” or “photos de moi à la mer”, and memoe finds the same photos it would for the English sentence. the app and its replies stay in English. people keep the names you gave them, so search for someone by that name, and words printed in a photo are matched as they are printed there.

can it find videos?

yes. memoe reads each video on your phone: its date, place and length, what is in its poster and, when the file is already on the phone, a couple of frames from inside it. ask for “my videos” or “clips of the dog” and the videos come back with their length on them. tap one and it plays, muted. search for someone by name and memoe looks for them in your videos too.

videos are never sent to the cloud, and memoe never downloads one just to search it. the free plan searches the videos taken since the oldest of its 1,000 photos, and memoe pro searches every video.

can i find more photos like one i have?

yes. open a photo and tap find similar, or press and hold a photo in one of memoe’s replies. memoe looks through the photos it has read, on your phone, and shows the ones that really look alike. sometimes that is a few, and sometimes none. it works on photos, not videos.

does it recognize faces?

yes, on your phone. memoe finds faces in your photos and groups the ones that look like the same person. you name them, and it asks same person? when it isn’t sure. then “mom at the beach” just works. you can also pick contacts, and memoe uses their pictures, on your phone, to suggest who is who. nothing is applied until you say yes.

the faces, the groups, the names and the contact pictures stay on your phone and are never uploaded. a name only leaves your phone if you type it into a search, as part of your sentence. delete account wipes them.

does memoe make albums by itself?

yes, if you let it. memoe goes through your library on your phone and makes albums of your trips, events and favorite things, like plane photos or sunsets. if you allow notifications, it tells you when an event or a trip is over and its album is ready. they wait in the albums tab under made for you, and only go into Apple Photos when you tap save to apple photos. turn them off in you if you would rather not. you can still ask for an album in your own words, like “make me an album that says quiet luxury.”

can i pool a trip with friends?

yes, with an iCloud shared album. after a trip, open it, tap share with friends and choose add to shared album in the iOS share sheet. your friends add their photos to that album in Apple Photos (they need an Apple account), and memoe reads the album on your phone and finds anyone in all of it. the first time, memoe reads it first and asks which one is you?

memoe only reads shared albums. it never changes one, and photos from one are never sent to the cloud.

will it delete anything without asking?

never. swiping left only fills a delete pile. you review it, tap to rescue anything, and iOS asks you to confirm. deleted photos and videos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.

does it work with iCloud Photos?

yes, it works with whatever Photos shows on your iPhone. to read a photo that only lives in iCloud, memoe asks Photos for a small preview, not the full original, and it waits for Wi-Fi to do that. you can allow cellular data in you (it is never used in Low Data Mode), and memoe tells you how many photos are waiting. a photo you open or swipe comes down from iCloud when you look at it. videos are never downloaded just to be searched, and clean up’s similar-shot finder only uses thumbnails already on the phone and never downloads originals.

how many photos and videos does it cover?

the newest 1,000 photos, and the videos taken since, are free; the whole library, every video included, comes with memoe pro. memoe gets them ready on your phone, newest first, and you can search and swipe while it works. dates, places, favorites and clean up cover your whole photo library either way.

can i go back to an earlier search?

yes. memoe keeps your conversations on your phone. once there is an earlier one, a small history button appears at the top right of home. open a conversation from there, or delete one, or all of them. delete account wipes them too.

how do i delete my account?

open you, tap delete account, and confirm with Apple one more time. memoe revokes its Sign in with Apple access and wipes everything it saved on your phone, from the faces and names to your conversations and clean up progress. your photos and albums in Apple Photos aren’t touched. more help is on the support page.
